It all began with Pareto and the 80/20 principle. Vilfredo Pareto was born in France in 1848. Among other things, Vilfredo Pareto is credited for what is known as the Pareto principle or the 80/20 rule.
The discovery was made during a study of how wealth was distributed among the Italian population. In his study he discovered that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. He also noticed that 80% of his garden peas were being produced by 20% of the pea pods. Through several studies of different phenomena, he concluded that in many cases 80% of the consequences stemmed from 20% of the causes. By doing so, he was the first to notice the variety of areas this principle applied to.
